Last Thursday, 31st July, the QRI State Management Committee (SMC) visited Gladstone, not just for our regular monthly meeting, but to join in on something special: the QRI Gladstone Committee’s much-loved mid-winter Christmas celebration at the Rocky Glen Hotel.

We held our meeting at 4pm, just before the festivities began, and were pleased to welcome the Gladstone Committee to join us, a tradition we have long valued.

Naturally, top of the agenda was the current temporary closure of the QRI Gladstone Members Hall. There were three key topics on the table:

  • Going Cashless: Following recent burglaries, the viability of a cashless operation is being explored.
  • Asbestos Report: A recent inspection raised health and safety concerns.
  • Building & Renovation Quote: A full renovation is estimated at $400,000, required to bring the hall up to code and make it family-friendly again.

After an open and honest discussion, we all agreed that spending that kind of money without proper due diligence would be unwise. So, I will be preparing a full report over the next eight weeks, outlining all the options available for both the SMC and QRI Gladstone Committee to consider.

In the meantime, the hall will stay closed, likely through to the end of 2025. However, it’s important to stress that this closure is temporary. There are no plans at this stage to shut the hall permanently.

The SMC has asked the Gladstone Committee to explore other venues for upcoming meetings and member events, to ensure our community stays connected and informed while decisions about the hall’s future are being worked through.

After the meeting, we put the serious discussions aside and enjoyed a warm, festive mid-winter Christmas dinner with the Gladstone Committee and local members. It was a wonderful evening, filled with laughter and camaraderie.

To our QRI Gladstone Committee and members, thank you for your patience and resilience. We know these are challenging times, but we are committed to finding the best path forward, together.
